Not many shows, are able to keep a long and stable fan base year after year. Many shows have a 1 to 2 season run before being chopped for something new or fresh. Network television is a harsh place ruled only by ratings. Supernatural is one of the few shows out there that have a long tenure on any network, they are, in fact, in the middle of their 11th season airing o the CW. That means the show has the unique distinction of being CW’s longest airing show to date. The only other show to hold a candle to them was Smallville, a show that they recently beat out for the record. However, it feels like every year the show is somehow on the chopping block, you can never feel confident that they will come back for another season. The network doesn’t renew it for multiple seasons, but seems to play it by ear– renewing it on an annual basis instead.
According to IBTimes the show wasn’t supposed to go past season 5. Mischa Collins, or Castiel as he is now in the show, said that he was surprised the show was even still around. When he signed on around season four he believed the show to be done soon and that the story was written to end around season five, “Right. Originally 5 was going to be the end of it. The story arch was designed to end at Season 5. Now, here we are going into Season 10,” said Collins. But here we are, season 11! The show really has no end in sight and has some of the most loyal fans around.
However, with a season 12 not yet confirmed, the CW network president Mark Pedowitz stated during a recent TCA press tour that he would be happy to continue with the show so long as Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, the two leading male characters of the show, remain happy and want to continue the show themselves:
“Both Jared and Jensen are having a blast, and as long as they have a blast, it’s a great thing. [In its] eleventh year, the show is performing better than it did last year, as well as you could ever hope. So, again, we have made no series pickups yet. We have not done anything along those lines, but I’m pretty hopeful that we’ll see it again.”
But while he cannot guarantee the shows continuance, he clarifies his stance on the show further:
“If they can keep delivering stories, and the numbers keep holding, and the guys want to do it, we’re going to try to keep going. I can’t tell you if there will be a season 12 yet. I can’t tell you if there will be a season 15 yet. I can’t tell you if it won’t outlast my tenure at the CW. My guess is it will outlast me.”
So there you have it, the president himself supports the show so long as they can keep up the momentum anyways, and the 11th season did run pretty strong with the ratings– so I don’t see the show ending just yet. And I certainly hope it continues for years to come! How else will I learn to fight monsters if and WHEN they arrive? This is one of CW’s longest running shows for a reason, they have some incredible actors and characters, solid writing and an extremely loyal and ever-growing fan base! So, while Pedowitz’s words aren’t quite a pick-up for the show, It feels fairly hopeful and positive.
