I’m going to go ahead and say it…. this is the best film of the entire franchise… at least for me. The Hunger Game: Mockingjay Part 2 was action packed, unlike the first part of this movie, has some fairly decent story-progression and character development and even has some horror-genre style to it that makes the film super interesting.
Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) actually has some solid screen time in this film as well. Which is great because he might be the best character in the film. He isn’t as one-dimensional as Katniss or Gale often are because he, unlike the other two, is actually dealing with some heavy shit. The capitol messed with his mind and turned Katniss from ultimate love to worst enemy. He has to sort through those feelings of uncertainty and often cannot tell what is real or imagined. So it is fun to see him battle this throughout the movie.
Since the main characters are IN the capitol and are attempting to assassinate President Snow, they are actively being hunted by former Game-Makers. This added an element of thriller/horror to the movies that were not found in the other films.. like certain parts felt almost like a slasher movie and they were done extremely well. You will be on the edge of your seat for no other reason than you have no idea when the enemy will strike or what type of attack they will use.
And the ending was heart-warming and done well… they stayed true to the book, which is rare for a book-turned-film and they do it in a way that leaved you more satisfied than when you read the final book. It felt hopeful rather than rushed and heart-warming rather than “shit…I feel like Katniss settled a bit…”
This was a great movie and I recommend that anyone and everyone go see it. Even if you’re not a fan of the franchise or just never got around to it, you would be fine reading the summary up to this film and going to see the movie. They do a great job of world-building and storytelling and most people would like this movie!
