I first started watching How I Met Your Mother when my older sister kept pestering me to. I was not all that interested in it before then. Some shows capture your attention via adds and look amazing and others just come off as lackluster. HIMYM was the ladder if the two. However, I immediately fell in love with the show and its characters. With only three episodes left, I figured it was time to share my thoughts.

The Show

HIMYM is a show about a man, named Ted Mosby, recalling to his children the story of how he met their mother. The tale he tells often involve his very close friends: college soulmates Marshall and Lily, the ultimate playboy and all around awesome guy Barney Stinson, and a beautiful and independent news anchor Robin Sherbatsky.

Most of the show is less about Ted actually meeting his future wife, but more of his struggles, victories, and despair felt during his life whilst he tries to meet “the one”. His friends lives are also thoroughly explored as they all find love and lose love throughout the series as well.

Thoughts
I personally love this show. All of the characters are super loveable and relatable. Ted is often not even the focal point of the show as his friends often take center stage. So, I figure that the characters themselves are the best way to start:

Ted Mosby

Ted, or “Teddie Westside” as he often calls himself, is a sappy and hopeless romantic. He stays true to his feelings and holds onto an idea of true love longer than most people would. He is also loyal to his friends, almost to a fault. However, he bounces from relationship to relationship throughout the series in his search for “the one” and it can often leave you frustrated. He has left, fairly solid relationships , for the smallest things within the series. Still, you get to see him at incredible peaks and devastating lows throughout the show and you really feel for the character.

Marshal Ericksen

Marshall Eriksen

Marshall is Ted’s college roommate and current New York City apartment roommate. They are best friends that have shared the same living space for many years. They get along really well and know each other almost in and out. Marshall is also dating Lily Aldrin. Lily is Marshall’s college girlfriend and soulmate. Their relationship is often the “ideal” to Ted who desperately wants what they have. Marshall is a Minnesota-native that was thrust into the Big Apple so his folksy niceness and trust in people can often get him into trouble. He is often the voice of reason for Ted and their mutual friend Barney Stinson. At the beginning of the series he is a law student hoping to become an environmental lawyer to “keep the world safe”. Like Ted (and most other characters in the show) you see him at his best and at his lowest lows.

Lily Aldrin

Lily is an interestingly dynamic character. She, at times, shares in Marshall’s ability to be the voice of reason, but also does many frustrating and (or) crazy things in the series that can leave you either scratching your head or shaking your fist in anger. She can be fairly adorable but also terrifying and fierce. You don’t see her at the same lows that you see Marshall and Ted at in the series. This might be due to the fact that her “lows” are often self inflicted. She starts off the show as a school teacher but takes on art school, traveling and even being an art curator of sorts. She is also terrible at keeping secrets and tends to fold under pressure. (Oh and also has a credit-
crippling shopping addiction)

Robin Scherbatsky

Robin is a Canadian-born news reporter with dreams of becoming a world famous news anchor. She is introduced very early in the series as a heavy love interest to Ted, who comes on too strong scaring her away. Robin has an odd past… One that is both incredibly many and rugged as well as girly and adorable. On one hand her father wanted a boy and raised her to be as tough as one (even leaving her in the Canadian wilderness to fend for herself). However on the other hand he was also a Canadian pop star that sang under the name “Robin Sparkles”.

She is also another Character that you get to see at losses during the series as she battles father issues, mother issues, job issues and love issues. Between all that she provides a lot of humor in the show. Later in the series she is the source of tension between this group of friends as well.

Barney Stinson

Barney Stinson

Its crazy how well Neil Patrick Harris (NPH), a homosexual man, can pull off the coolest and man-whoriest character on television. Barney is the main source of fun and awesome in the show. In many cases, his antics and hilarity steal the show. Barney appeared in Ted, Marshall, and Lily’s life one night at the local bar (above which Ted and Marshall love). Barney attempted to forcibly take Ted under his wing in hopes to teach him how to be a player. After that, it seems, he just never left. Barney is the person, I think, every man wants to be. He is basically rich, even though you have no idea what he does… But it seems easy, he hits on girls all the time (and succeeds). And when I say “hit on” its not just cheesy pick up, though there are those as well, he has created not only a mythology and way of life (know as the bro code) bit has also devised a book of “plays” or strategies that he used to pick up women.

The bro code is now available in many hotels in place of the bible

Ted mosby swearing upon the bro code… Aka a “broath”

He is also very loyal to his friends and loved ones but is not always honest…preferring to tell elaborate lies over the truth in many occasions. He will also, often, accept ridiculous challenges and often wins them.

Honestly I can’t begin to cover this entire show. There is so much I didn’t mention, partly for the sake of length and partly to stay away from spoilers, you will just have see the show for yourself! It has everything. Hilarity, depth, love, fun, tears and more! I, personally, am very said to see the series go!!
